2018: the anniversary of the carol Silent Night
‘Silent Night, Holy Night’. The most famous Christmas carol in the world is celebrating an anniversary next year. On 24 December 1818, Joseph Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber played their carol for the first time. It’s a cause for celebration in the Salzburg region, Upper Austria and Tyrol, where they start celebrating the anniversary in 2017. The carol Silent Night, declared an intangible cultural heritage in Austria by UNESCO in 2011, epitomises the Christmas tradition in the German-speaking world. Now, it rings out at Christmas time around the world in around 300 different languages.
